Things You Can Rent To Make Extra MoneyThere are many items you may be able to rent to make extra money.

Renting out products or services can be a great way to make extra money with little work. If you’re not using the item anyway, then it can also be a great way to find use for items that you’re not wanting (or ready) to part with.

Basically, make your stuff work for you and learn how to make extra money!

Making extra money can change your life and it may help you:

  • Pay off your debt;
  • Save for things such as a vacation;
  • Stop living paycheck to paycheck;
  • Reach retirement sooner;
  • Not feel as stuck at your job;
  • Become more diversified.

Determining what you can charge for your rental items can vary widely. I recommend doing some research and seeing what the supply and demand are, what others are renting similar products or services for, and so on.

Below are different things you may be able to rent to make extra money.

Rent your garage or parking spot to make extra money.

If you have extra space in your garage, you may be surprised to hear that there are people willing to pay you for this. Some just don’t have the room at their own place, but they still want a safe storage area for their belongings, such as a classic car.

I once heard about someone who made an extra $200 a month by doing this. I also know someone who rents their neighbor’s garage space.

You can also rent out a parking spot. Depending on where you live, you may be able to pull in a nice bit of cash each month.

You can learn more about this at Neighbor Review: Make Money Renting Your Storage Space.

Rent an extra room in your home to make extra money.

This can be a great way to find use for the space you already have. If you have extra space in your home or even if your whole home is available, then you may want to rent it out. You can rent out a room or your whole home on a daily, weekly, monthly, or even on a long-term basis.

The most popular home rental website I know of is Airbnb.

Rent your bathroom to make extra money.

This one is similar to renting a room or home, but perhaps a little more interesting.

With AirPNP, you can rent out your bathroom.

Yes, this actually exists.

Rent your car to make extra money.

Did you know that you can rent out your car on an hourly, daily, weekly, or on an even long-term basis in certain areas? If you know you aren’t going to use your car and that your insurance will still cover your vehicle, then this could be an interesting idea with very little work needed.

The top website I know of for renting out your car is Turo.

Rent your money to make extra money.

Websites such as Lending Club allow you to loan your money to others and earn interest.

It’s similar to if a bank loaned money to an individual. You would be the bank and the person “renting” the money would be the individual borrower. Of course, you do need to be careful because just like with any loan, there is a risk.

Rent wedding and party supplies to make extra money.

Many brides nowadays are renting furniture and other event supplies so that they can save money and have less clutter. This includes couches, ceremony arbors, tables, chairs, centerpiece decorations, mason jars, photo booths, and so on.

To rent wedding decorations, you can place advertisements on websites such as Craigslist, have a storefront for wedding rentals and event supplies, and so on. You could also let those in the wedding industry in your local area know about your services as well because word of mouth is big in the wedding industry.

Rent yourself to make extra money.

Yes, I really just said that. You can rent yourself out as a friend on websites such as RentAFriend.

Here’s a snippet from their website:

RentAFriend.com has Friends from around the world available for hire. Rent a Friend to attend a social event, wedding, or party with you. Hire someone to introduce you to new people, or someone to go to a movie or a restaurant with. Hire a Friend to show you around a new town, teach you a new skill/hobby, or just someone for companionship.

What would you rent to make extra money? What would you not do?

    I did not know you could rent out your bathroom! I love the idea! 😀

    1. Haha it’s an interesting way!

  2. Yasir Khan

    Being resourceful is very important if you want to make extra money and there are lots of things that you can do. I am amazed that you can “Rent your bathroom” and “Rent yourself” to earn more. This sound interesting and fun, maybe I should check it out.

  3. Jaime

    The rent your bathroom and rent yourself as a friend are the most quirky ones. lol. There seems to be no shortage of ideas for side hustles.

  4. Dee @ Color Me Frugal

    I had no idea you could rent a friend! That’s awesome, and probably a fun way to make some money- for the extroverts out there, anyway! Great list!

  5. RentaFriend sounds hilarious to me. It’s a good idea, but I would love to see how some of those matches work out!

    1. Me too! I was poking around the site while writing this article and I actually found a few of my Facebook friends on there.

  6. The rent a friend idea is quirky indeed! It is interesting that you can rent out your bathroom though. Having trouble figuring out how there is a demand for something like that, but if it’s out there, there must be some demand, huh?

  7. Great article, I hadn’t heard about some of these!

  8. Kim @ YourFinanceProfessor

    Oh my goodness! I’m afraid of what might happen in my rented out bathroom. There are not many opportunities of this kind where I live, but I could see these as being great opportunities to get extra cash without doing a thing in bigger cities.

    1. Haha yeah I don’t think I could rent out my bathroom.

  9. A friend of mine has a beautiful big backyard that he decked out with a pond and flowers. His backyard was featured in a garden magazine and now he rents it out for weddings. It is only for wedding ceremonies so it’s just for an hour or two and he is paid as much as a wedding venue!

  10. Tanya @ A Mindful Migration

    Most of these I was familiar with but I have never heard of renting your bathroom. I’m not exactly sure I want to know how that works but kudos to whoever had the idea to do it and make it profitable!

  11. That rent a bathroom is funny. I will pass on that one.

  12. Haha yeah! I would like to meet someone who actually rents out their bathroom. That would be an interesting interview…

    1. Haha I wonder how much people make…

  13. Jayson @ Monster Piggy Bank

    Michelle, this is the first time I have heard of renting a bathroom. LOL By the way, renting a parking space sounds a good idea. And, I think I gotta make my space into that. Thanks for these wonderful ideas Michelle.

  14. I love the idea of renting out wedding supplies. I have several chalkboards that I have lent out to friends for their weddings. I would love to purchase more and then offer them for rent. How would I protect myself from people stealing them / abusing them / using permanent chalk paint on them? Would I need to make it an official business?

    1. I’m really not sure how you could protect yourself, but a contract would be a good start!

  15. Alexander Vishnevsky

    Rent A Friend? Wonderful idea, a real Christmas present for me. Thank you very much, Michelle! I’m in and have already registered my account. Cheers!

  16. I live in my RV so that wouldn’t work for me, but it could for others!

  17. Interesting, I didn’t know that is possible rent bathroom, but hei is interesting !!

  18. Connie @ Savvy With Saving

    My friends were actually joking the other day about how we should “rent” our friendship out for people looking for a group to hang out with. Totally a joke but didn’t realize it was an actually a thing!

  19. Alexander Vishnevsky

    I’ve got an idea! If renting a bathroom is possible, why not rent a balcony?

  20. The wedding industry is probably the most ideal industry to start a rental business. It’s one day out of people’s lives and no one wants to buy things for it, or at least buy as few things as possible. My wife and I have a “stretch” life goal of owning a wedding venue. Might be a fun thing to do in our 50s (or earlier if we somehow make enough money to start it earlier).

  21. Love the idea of renting out your garage or parking space! Definitely going to look into this. Renting your bathroom… not so much 😉

  22. Suzie

    Wow thank you so much for all the info. Rent a friend? So easy…I just signed up! I’ve been reading a lot about making extra money. I’m slowly wanting to not work 8-5 as a dental assistant.I’m working as a temp right now.And on the side make extra with,Favor,Lyft and Uber. It will be awhile before I start generating money with my blog. Thanks so much again!!

  23. The good news about renting as a side hustle is that anyone can give yourself free advertising by blogging about it and having a special WordPress plugin to auto-share posts on Pinterest, Twitter, LinkedIn, 500px, Google+, Facebook, and ReddIt. I love this side hustle stuff! 🙂

  24. The side hustle mindset will change the history of human thinking for everyone that’s willing to make healthy entrepreneurial changes. 🙂
